How to build a zip line in my backyard?

Best Answer...

Hi, i've been looking to build a zip line, but im not sure of all the materials i would need. i've been looking in pre made zip line kits, but its cheaper to get the materials yourself. what all would i need? I know you need steel cable, a trolley, and a harness. anything else i need to build a SAFE zip line?

thanks!

Answer:

I've had one for years. Kids love them. Above guy is right about obstacles and such. Two trees are great if they are in the right place. I moved mine and used a tv tower on one end and tied it off to a little red barn reinforced inside to take the pull. The trolly ...... careful cause mine was free till i got 4 stitches from this part..... use a auto tire and cut two holes opposite sides straight across from each other in the middle of the tread. I took a piece of 2 by 6 or whatever and 2 used pulleys and built a trolly inside of this. the cable goes through the holes. It can not fall off! At the bottom take another tire and do the same. put cable through it then a big flat washer or two then put the cable through about a 10 foot piece of 3/4 or 1 inch black pipe. This gives you room to stop. More washers and I wrapped a tree high using 1 by 2 blocks up and down a few times as to not kill the tree. The life is in the bark part. use a few heavy u bolts to secure it use 3 for safety even. Same tie off at top. cum a long to pull up. It will stretch in time. The ride flies down and the tires act like shock absorbers. A hoot . Had it over 20 years . replaced cable once. mine is about 175 feet long on a 3/8 cable. wicking oil on it would help but never got around to it. have a ball. you need about a 10 foot drop at least. Note: Steel belted tires are a pain for this. Drill with hole saw not knife!
